Do I Have a Xarelto Lawsuit?

By filing a lawsuit against the maker of Xarelto, you may be entitled to collect compensation for all current and future medical expenses related to the treatment and damages for pain and suffering. Filing a lawsuit can help hold the drug’s manufacturer accountable for releasing an allegedly defective drug into the marketplace, and to discourage other pharmaceutical companies from engaging in similar conduct.

Anticoagulation therapy is one of the most important advances in modern medicine, saving thousands of lives from the complications of atrial fibrillation and mechanical heart valves, and preventing recurrent venous thromboembolism. Warfarin and Heparins have been the predominant anticoagulants used. However, new brands of blood thinners are the first alternatives to Warfarin in 60 years.

The following are known side effects of Xarelto (Rivaroxaban):

xarelto-10mg-tablet

Xarelto, a once daily pill manufactured by Bayer AG and marketed in the U.S. by Johnson & Johnson, was approved for atrial fibrillation in 2011. The condition affects about 3 million Americans, causing blood to pool in a storage chamber of the heart, where it can clot and travel to the brain.

Growing complaints of bleeding events and deaths tied to the new crop of drugs have made some top U.S. cardiologists hesitant to prescribe them. Some are proposing a more rigorous monitoring regimen for when they are used.

Patients taking warfarin require close monitoring and regular blood tests as well as dietary and lifestyle changes.

These new anticoagulants are heavily marketed as superior to Warfarin with concerns that no monitoring is required or necessary. The real world use of Pradaxa, Xarelto, and Eliquis, however, raises concerns about the risk of stroke, and serious bleeding, particularly in patients with poor kidney function.

Prominent U.S. heart doctors stress that Pradaxa, Xarelto, and Eliquis, which have no known antidote for a bleeding emergency, is a major health concern compared to Warfarin.

They also say that patients using the new anticoagulants should undergo testing ahead of time to ensure good kidney function, be carefully taught potential pitfalls of the drugs and be seen by doctors periodically, especially after a switch is made.

The nonprofit Institute for Safe Medication Practices estimated last month that 542 reports of deaths associated with Pradaxa were reported to the FDA, topping all other medicines, including Warfarin, with 72 deaths. Adverse event reports on Xarelto were not available.

European regulators have instructed Boehringer Ingelheim to add warnings about the bleeding risk to Pradaxa's package insert. 4,000 cases have settled for $650 million.
